Frequently asked questions
What is OpenTrust?
A free, shared notebook where Indian online merchants note down mobile numbers that caused them trouble, and check numbers before they ship. It runs as a community project and we aren't trying to make money from it.
Does a report mean someone committed fraud?
No. Reports are unverified observations written by individual merchants about their own experience. They are not a finding, a verdict or a blacklist. Please treat them as one input among many and use your own judgement.
How do I get started?
Register your business. After an admin approves it you get 100,000 free checks, can create an API key, and can start using the API the same day.
Is it really free? What happens when I run out of checks?
Yes. Each lookup uses one check from your allowance. If you're running low, write to [email protected], tell us what you're building, and we'll set a generous limit. There's no payment required.
Do I have to report numbers to use it?
No. Sharing is voluntary and doesn't change how many checks you get. The more merchants share what they've seen, the more useful it is for everyone.
What kinds of experiences can I share?
Things like refused COD orders, orders that appeared fake, repeated return abuse, disputed payments, and callers posing as a bank, KYC agent or your own support team to get an OTP or money. You describe what happened, and you only share the mobile number.
What should I write in notes?
Facts you saw yourself, like "Refused 3 COD orders in March". No names, insults, accusations, emails, links or phone numbers. Notes that break these rules are rejected or removed.
Who can see my reports?
Other approved merchants see what happened, your note and the date, marked as coming from a verified merchant. They never see your business name, and the full number is never returned, only the last 4 digits. Our admins can see who reported, for moderation and grievances.
How is the number stored?
We store a keyed hash for matching and an encrypted copy that only admins can read for moderation.
A number was noted by mistake. What can be done?
Write to the grievance contact on the Privacy page. We'll review it and remove reports that aren't justified.
Can I report the same number twice?
No. One report per merchant per number.
